App being developed to increase participation in sport
Canadian software company Geosports is developing an app to try and increase participation in sport in an age in which the developer believes people are less involved in sports and physical activity.
The app allows users to advertise the sport they want to practice, along with the time and date that they are available, with a notification being sent out to other users with same interest near to their chosen location.
"We are very excited to finally launch this project,” says Simon Chevalier, founder of Geosports.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime; to create something which may change the way we do things as sports amateurs and professionals."
The app could also potentially be used to help teams or local clubs find new members, or discover other enthusiasts to cover for injured teammates.
Geosports says that it is developing the app to help combat a decline in sports participation.
It claims that in North America sports participation figures have been continuously dropping for all age categories over the past 20 years, while on the other hand, the use of mobile phones has increased dramatically in just three years.
It cites that the number of smartphone users has almost doubled since 2010, going from 7.8 million to 13.4 million.
Therefore harnessing the use of a device which people are seemingly always connected to could be a way of engaging people with sport, while also making it easier to organise sports-related events.
The group launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the development of the app this month, with contributions being accepted up until 2 April.
