A spokesperson for Arts Council England has denied reports that it is in crisis following the departure of six of the seven department heads within the organisation.
Following a restructuring implemented by chief executive Peter Hewitt, those leaving next month will include the organisation’s two top female executives – Kim Evans, executive director of arts and Pauline Tambling, executive director of development – alongside the heads of drama, literature, visual arts and dance and some of their deputies.
As part of the restructuring, Hewitt asked everyone in the arts departments to reapply for their jobs, prompting the exodus.
Commenting on the restructuring, Hewitt said: “A number of people – at all levels and right across the national office – will be moving on and new people will join us. Those that will leave do so with our heartfelt thanks for their contribution, energy and dedication in making the Arts Council the organisation it is and with our very best wishes for the future.”
However, speaking to The Sunday Times, chair of Arts Council England, Sir Christopher Frayling, said: “I didn’t realise that the changes would be so dramatic. It might seem like a huge purge. Yes, the council is now a very tense and demoralised place.” Details: www.artscouncil.org.uk
