Craggy Island to open in September
Work has now been completed on the construction of the new £500,000 Craggy Island climbing centre in Guildford, Surrey, which is scheduled to open in early September.
The centre will offer a total of 1000sq m of climbing in five different areas and has been privately funded by joint managing directors, local businessmen Rob Mitchell and Steve Lane.
The £300,000 climbing surfaces, designed and engineered by Entre-Prises, comprise a bouldering wall, a 5m competition overhang, a freeform arch, a profile tower, a chock stone arch, a freeform prow, numerous slabs and a traverse wall. There will be up to 80 roped lines and over 300 graded routes offering top-rope and lead climbing, abseiling and bouldering.
All activities will be suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced climbers.
In addition to the climbing facilities, there will also be an on-site climbing shop, Rock On, and a mezzanine café area.
Mitchell and Lane plan to encourage use of Craggy Island by groups from schools, businesses and special needs as well as the general public.
The centre will be managed by Paolo Fubini, a member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and a technical advisor for many climbing centres both in the UK and Italy. Details: www.indoor-climbing.com
