The Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust has launched a First Responder scheme to train volunteers in lifesaving skills in Rhoose and Penarth, Wales.
First responders are volunteers from the community who are given specialist training to provide vital care and first aid in an emergency, before an ambulance arrives.
The responders are trained to carry out basic lifesaving skills, recognition of cardiac conditions, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator.
The training is provided by the ambulance service, which also provides the necessary support needed to carry out the role.
Tony Rossetti, first responder officer for the trust, said: “Specialist training for members of the public in basic life-support skills can save lives. The First Responder scheme does not, in any way, replace emergency services but it is a valuable and important resource and can be vital in the first few minutes of a life-threatening situation. This is evidenced by the high rates of bystander CPR corresponding with patient survival rates.
We are delighted to launch the scheme in Rhoose and Penarth and look forward to training many willing volunteers in these important skills.”
There are already more than 100 First Responder schemes involving around 1,500 volunteers across Wales. Details: www.wales.nhs.uk
