New CA$340m museum planned for Alberta
A major new CA$340m (£215.8m, EUR245.5m, US$357.4m) museum is to be developed in the centre of Edmonton, Canada, which will explore the history of Alberta.
The proposed new Royal Alberta Museum will comprise 36,000sq m (387,501sq ft) of gallery space – twice as much as the existing attraction – and will be able to host international exhibits and rare artefacts. Alberta’s provincial government is partnering with the City of Edmonton to acquire the site of the new museum, which will be located on the corner of 103A Avenue and 9 Street.
Plans for the Royal Alberta Museum scheme also include uninterrupted public access to its displays and artefacts during the construction process and the potential for future growth. The Alberta government has committed CA$180m (£114.3m, EUR129.9m, US$189.2m) to the project, including CA$30m (£19m, EUR21.6m, US$31.5m) from central government.
Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel said: “The new Royal Alberta Museum will complement the other facilities anchoring our vibrant arts district. “It will also become a significant part of our vision to strengthen Edmonton's reputation of having one of Canada's most diverse and exciting cultural hubs.”
The new museum is scheduled to open in 2015.
