New leisure centre for Horley
A new leisure centre is to be built on the site of a disused school in the town of Horley, Surrey.
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council has bought the former Court Lodge secondary school site from Surrey County Council to help provide improved community facilities.
The new leisure centre will house a 25m swimming pool, a sports hall, a gym and a dance studio, as well as around 150 parking places and 15 new affordable homes.
Joan Spiers, leader of the borough council, said: “We promised the people of Horley that when they took the additional housing we would ensure they had the necessary community facilities.”
The outdated Horley Anderson leisure centre will now be knocked down, although the site’s Innes Pavilion will remain standing for use by a local social club and to provide changing facilities for those using the nearby football pitches.
The county council’s Keys Youth Centre will be relocated from the secondary school site to its new location at the refurbished Old Fire Station in late autumn.
County council leader Nick Skellett added: “By joining forces and working closely together, the two councils have laid the foundations for impressive new developments that will enhance Horley and give residents high-quality services they can enjoy for many years to come.”
Outline proposals will go before the borough council’s planning committee on 28 January, with applications for decision being heard at a subsequent planning committee.
