New youth club opens in Aberavon
A new youth club - requested by local residents in a vote held last August - has been unveiled by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council (NPTCBC) in Aberavon, South Wales.
The club will be held at St Mary's Hall and will run on Tuesdays for young people aged between 14 and 25-years-old, and Thursdays for 11-13-year-olds. Activities will include pool, table tennis, computer games consoles, music and board games after funding was received from the Welsh Assembly Government's Cohesion Fund and South Wales Police.
Local residents in the Sandfields East and Aberavon Renewal Area were invited to vote on what project the community needed most, as part of the area's fifth anniversary last summer. A choice of the youth club or a waste development officer was put to the residents, with the youth club receiving a majority of the votes cast.
NPTCBC leader Ali Thomas said: "Youth clubs provide a safe environment where young people can socialise, make new friends and enjoy activities. "They also help to reduce anti social behaviour in the community by encouraging young people to do something positive in their spare time, rather than spending it on the streets."
