Scottish Highlands the most attractive place in Britain
The Highlands has been placed at the top of Britain's 10 most attractive places to visit.
In a survey conducted by Collins Road Atlases, the Highlands scored 79 points out of a possible 100, more than 20 points clear of nearest rival Devon.
The survey was co-ordinated by a panel of eight from England, Scotland and Wales, which graded the regions of Britain across a range of categories including scenic beauty, cultural and historical interest, tourist provisions and entertainment.
The area's rich historical heritage, which includes nearly 30 castles, battlefields and ancient monuments, combined with nature reserves, lochs, lakes and mountains meant that the Highlands came top in four of the 10 main categories, winning best coastline, best history, best geography and best tourist towns.
Devon, in second place, was commended for its coastline and landscape, while London, which scored 48 points, was regarded as the best year-round destination.
