UK Sport report charts medal targets
UK Sport has released details of the medal targets that have been agreed with sports at their respective 2009 World or European Championships.
Up to 44 medals are being targeted at World level in Olympic sports and between 19 and 27 more in Paralympic events on the world stage.
Since the last Mission 2012 outputs in December, UK Sport has confirmed its funding for the London cycle, between April 2009 and March 2013, with total investment reaching £304m.
The performance targets issued by UK Sport are the first set of annual targets set between UK Sport and national governing bodies as part of their funding agreements. In most cases these show a medal range targeted by each funded sport at their particular World Championship event.
John Steele, UK Sport’s chief executive, said: “The performance targets for 2009 highlight the need to build on the success of Beijing with our established performers, and bring through those who have the potential to succeed in 2012.
"At this stage of an Olympic cycle it’s not necessarily about topping the medal tables; it’s more about ensuring we’re best placed to deliver when it really matters in 2012.”
UK Sport's latest report also show that efforts to raise additional funds through the private sector have bore some fruit through the establishment of Team 2012 – a partnership of LOCOG, the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association and UK Sport.
Steele added: “There have been unprecedented levels of action in terms of getting funding agreements in place."
