VORM to lead isle of Oostenberg makeover
Werkspoorhal, an industrial hall on the urban island of Oostenberg will be reshaped into a public monument and community centre by a team of architects recruited by Dutch developer, VORM.
The new complex – set to be designed by Netherlands-based firms LOLA, OZ, Workshop, Flux Landscape, and BETA – will occupy the docklands near Roest, Amsterdam's popular beach.
Its facilities and amenities will include space for art exhibitions as well as a quayside boardwalk and open market.
In the pipeline since December 2017, the project will be a major overhaul of the area, which first emerged as a place of maritime commerce in the 1600s.
Speaking on the development, Peter Kramer, director of real estate firm Stadgenoot Ontwikkeling, which awarded VORM the contract said: "Where machines and ship engines used to be produced in the Werkspoorhal, the hall should itself become a motor for meeting in the coming centuries."
Werkspoorhal – once an operations base for the Dutch East India Trading Company – was declared a national monument in 2001.
The project is set to be completed in 2022.
