Wellington Sports Centre opens Z3 Fitness Zone for kids
Tone Leisure has unveiled a new kids fitness area at Wellington Sports Centre in Somerset thanks to a £0.2m grant from the Big Lottery Fund.
The Z3 Fitness Zone was created in a refurbished area of the centre, following consultation with a committee of local youngsters, set up to ensure the new facility would appeal to people aged 10-16 years old.
With equipment supplied by ZigZag - including Xer-Dance Mats and a Sportwall - the name Z3 comes from the three Zs in 'ZigZag Zone. There are also Nintendo Wii games and other fitness equipment.
"Tone Leisure is passionate about encouraging people of all ages to find ways they enjoy of keeping fit," said Joel Chapman, the sports trust's commercial director.
"Our remit when working with local authorities is to improve public experiences of sports and leisure facilities and by working with the young people's committee we've made sure that Z3 will be enjoyed by the very people it's intended for.
"With the help of The Big Lottery Fund we're delighted to be able to provide local young people with a safe, welcoming place to meet their friends. Rather than sitting at home on the sofa playing console games they can come to Z3, still play those types of games and some new ones, and get active at the same time."
Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of the South West region, added: "It gives me great pleasure to see Lottery good cause cash going to such an innovative and worthwhile project, and that young people have had such a large part to play in its success.
"The Big Lottery Fund was set up to work with community groups and to fund projects that improve health, education and the environment, and Z3 is the perfect example of an initiative that aims to do just that."
