£12m boost for London grassroots sports
Grassroots sports projects across London are to benefit from more than £12m worth of investment announced by mayor Boris Johnson as part of a drive to increase participation.
A total of £4m will be made available through the Sports Legacy Fund, while the remaining £8m will be match funding and takes the mayor's investment in sport to more than £10m. Meanwhile, a further £20m has also been leveraged in through match funding, which has been sourced from the private, public and charitable sector.
The latest funding announcement now ensures that the mayor has reached a target of £30m to be channelled into the capital's grassroots ahead of the London 2012 Games. Among the projects to benefit are a plan for nine new wheelchair basketball clubs; the creation of a two-storey karate club in Kingston-upon-Thames; and the reopening of a Charlton lido.
Johnson said: "From hockey in Hillingdon to karate in Kingston, we are storming ahead to revamp facilities and increase sports participation across the board. "This investment, which sees some hugely important match funding being pledged, is fantastic news for Londoners of all ages and abilities from across the city."
