press release: GLL
New partnership draws near for Mole Valley
22 Nov 2023
Customers and staff at Leatherhead Leisure Centre will transfer to GLL on 1st December 2023 / GLL
The new partnership means customers and staff at Dorking Sports Centre will transfer on 26th November, with those at Leatherhead Leisure Centre following on 1st December.
GLL – which operates facilities under the ‘Better’ brand – is aiming to make the transition as smooth as possible. All customers’ memberships will continue as normal, including pre-paid sessions and classes. The centres opening hours will remain the same.
Councillor Nick Wright, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “We are delighted to welcome GLL (‘Better’) as our new provider of leisure centre services, and we look forward to working with them on promoting an active lifestyle in Mole Valley. This new partnership will see significant investment in the infrastructure of both centres – changing the ‘ look and feel’ of the facilities. We believe this new partnership will create new opportunities for active leisure in Mole Valley, and will improve customers’ experience.
“Better has a great history of delivering services in an affordable and accessible way. I very much hope that together we can build on this and ensure that more residents will be able to try activities they’ve not considered before. As we know, regular exercise offers not only great physical benefits, but also supports mental well-being.
”I would like to thank again our previous providers Places Leisure in Dorking and Fusion Lifestyle in Leatherhead for working with us for the past 10 and 15 years respectively.”
Peter Bundey, CEO of GLL said: “We are delighted to be a new partner with Mole Valley District Council. We are looking forward to working together to enhance leisure services and provide health and wellbeing opportunities for local residents across both facilities.
“As a Charitable Social Enterprise and the largest operator in the leisure sector, we will bring our experience and expertise to increase services on offer. We look forward to sharing exciting plans and developments with users and local communities.
We are working to make the transfer as seamless as possible for customers and staff.”
This year, GLL celebrates 30 years with the launch of a new 5 Year Corporate Plan which puts customers and communities at the heart of its services with a commitment to tackling health inequalities, improving opportunities through partnerships locally and reducing energy use and waste.
GLL’s operating model is a Charitable Social Enterprise – a staff-owned co-op that has no shareholders to pay and can invest back into grass-roots programmes and facilities for the benefit of customers. In this way it can achieve its goal of improving the health and wellbeing of the local community.

Plans for the next 12 months
Our 2025 strategies and roadmap are already well-shaped and are based on our Five-Year Plan, which was launched last year.
With our positive performance and improved social outcomes during 2024, GLL is well placed to be at the forefront of societal, economic and environmental change.
The future will see us focusing on excellent customer service alongside our social enterprise values and growing our social impact, while effective partnerships with national health and wellbeing agencies will support individual lifestyle and wellness outcomes.
We’re delighted to see strong data indicators that show engagement with a diversity of age, demography and levels of activity across our facilities.
To foster community strength, health and mental wellbeing, we’ll balance the provision of health, fitness, team sport and social activities across a 50/50 split of male/female users, backed by an enhanced digital customer focus.
